Spring & Summer Garden Prep

It’s time to start seeds, clear weeds, improve soil and prepping the garden beds.

When thinking about what seeds to start, you want to look up your zone (based off your zip code) and find the last frost date. Then you want to decide which cold hardy plants to start and how far ahead of time. Some seeds take longer to sprout, others need to grow quite a bit before transplanting, to give them enough time to produce before it gets to hot, depending on where you are.

In zone 8b for example, our last frost date is usually in March. I like to start tomatoes and peppers, bc they take a while to get strong and large enough to produce, and they tend to not do very well in extreme heat or cold. So, you need to get a good sized plant outside right after the last frost, to ensure a good growing season.

I like to use seed growing trays, then transplanting them into larger containers until they go outside.

I use a seed starting soil mix of:

8 parts pre moistened coco coir

1 part vermiculite

1 part perlite or pumice

You can also buy a seed starter mix, but making your own is more cost effective and chemical free.

The key to starting seeds is to put them in the correct depth, point the part the root comes out of down, and keep the soil moist.

If you have any questions, let me know. I would love to know what you’re growing this season!
